Natural Knitwear began in 1986 when, as a bored housewife with young children, I purchased a very ancient spinning wheel and learnt the art of hand-spinning.
I sourced fleeces from a local farmer, which I spun into yarn and then hand-knitted the finished garment. These were the first tentative steps of Natural Knitwear. Initially I used only un-dyed wool from the Jacob breed of sheep, then gradually introduced wool from other breeds. This allowed me to produce knitwear with variations in texture and handle.
As Natural Knitwear flourished, it became apparent that I couldn't make enough garments by hand-spinning and hand-knitting. As a result, I had wool professionally spun and began machine knitting. At this stage I also introduced subtle shades of colour by having the wool dyed, but it remained important that I maintained the 'natural' ethos of Natural Knitwear by using no man-made fibres.
The addition of handwoven tweed to complement the knitwear then followed and this features in our lovely range of jackets, wraps, scarves and throws.
Each garment is made using only the finest quality wool, designed by myself and individually made with the help of a small
team of dedicated knitters. No mass production here!
